Once you have that you are ready to download an EGTB. There are other guides on how to configure an engine and GUI. I also have Stockfish 8 downloaded and ready to go whenever I click Tools -> Start Engine 1. Ok so first off you will need a chess GUI (graphical user interface) and a chess engine downloaded and configured to work on that GUI.
For Stockfish you will want to use Syzygy, but for other engines you may want to use a different EGTB. This guide should still work for Scid vs PC, and if you use a different GUI or chess engine it could possibly still work with some alterations. Note: I personally downloaded the Syzygy Tablebase to work with Stockfish 8 on Scid vs Mac. Adding a tablebase to your engine (some come with them but stockfish notably does not) can aid in evaluating endgames properly, even in positions with more pieces than your tablebase allows for since the engine can terminate its calculation once it reaches a known tablebase position. The 7 piece tablebase is about 100TB and can only really be accessed online. A 6 piece tablebase, like the one lichess uses can be about 150GB. A 5 piece tablebase (which would cover the position linked above) can be about a 1 GB download.
Complete tablebases have been constructed for up to 7 pieces on the board. Note how stockfish evaluates this particular position as +5, which seems winning, however if you click on the book icon to see the tablebase, this position is a known draw. What is a Tablebase and Why should I want one?Įndgame Tablebases or EGTBs are essentially a large list of files that chart out whether a given endgame position with few pieces on the board is a win, draw, or loss for White (or Black.) You can play around with the tablebase in lichess here. Please continue to give us your feedback and suggestions on how we can help make /r/chess better for everyone.
